What is DeContruction?

Habitat Deconstruction Services are a cost-effective and environmentally responsible way to remove residential structures while maximizing material recovery. Performed mostly by hand, this method can result in the salvage of up to 85% of a building’s materials for reuse and provides an alternative to traditional “wrecking ball” demolition.

Habitat ReStore’s DeConstruction program offers tremendous benefits for the environment, the individual donor of materials, the community, and for Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville.

Customers can claim the fair-market-value of all materials salavaged through our DeConstruction as a tax deduction.

Habitat ReStore DeConstruction is licensed, insured, and bonded (We are insured with liability coverage and worker’s comp). Certificates of Insurance will be provided upon request. Local references are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Why is DeConstruction better for the environment?
A:  Environmentally, deconstruction offers a huge reduction of construction and demolition waste from local landfills. Construction and Demolition waste typically accounts for about 35% of all landfill materials so reducing this waste is a high priority in overall waste reduction.

Since opening in 2005, the Metro Louisville Habitat ReStore has kept over 4,000,000 pounds of usable materials from our landfill.  Efforts like these represent substantial, measurable impact in our community.

Q:  Are there any other benefits of DeConstruction?
A:  Benefits of Habitat’s DeConstruction program go beyond improving the environment; it also benefits donors, shoppers, and families that apply for Habitat homes.

For the individual donor of materials, the DeConstruction program offers the advantage of saving money.  While we do charge for our services, these fees are very competitive, and can usually be offset by the tax deduction from the salvaged materials.

Shoppers benefit from deconstruction because quality salvaged materials are sold at Habitat’s ReStore providing an affordable resource for people who are trying to improve their home.

Lastly, families that apply for a Habitat for Humanity home must complete 400 hours of sweat equity before they can purchase their home.  Habitat ReStore’s DeConstruction program offers another way for these families to partner with Habitat for Humanity while they earn their sweat equity hours.

Q:  Where does the money from your DeConstruction services go?
A:  All revenue generated from Deconstruction services and the sale of the salvaged materials at the Habitat ReStore benefits Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville.
